Holders of the National Collection of Rosa Species

The United Kingdom’s long history of plant collecting and horticulture, both amateur and professional, has generated an unprecedented pool of the world’s plant species and their cultivated derivatives. In recognition of this uniquely British resource, the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens, NCCPG, was set up "to conserve, document, promote and make available Britain and Ireland’s rich biodiversity of garden plants for the benefit of everyone through horticulture, education and science."

It celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2003 and its patron is H.R.H. The Prince of Wales.

Its main conservation endeavour is the National Plants Collections® scheme. Collections are held by private individuals, local authorities, botanical and educational institutions and nurseries of which Peter Beales Roses is the holder of the National Collection of Rosa Species.

Collectively these roses are the pure roses of nature. Their flowers are usually single and most will bear hips after flowering. They have a variety of garden uses, from the wild garden to mixed shrubberies. All of the other groups of roses have evolved from these by natural means or by man’s manipulation.

The roses are grown as part of the Peter Beales Rose Gardens, which cover three acres at the nursery site in Attleborough, Norfolk. Entry is free and the gardens are open all year round.

In glorious full bloom the gardens are an inspirational mix of colour and perfume and a must for any enthusiast. There are many award-winning varieties including large, old-fashioned roses, ramblers of huge proportions, shrub roses in a myriad of colours and lower procumbent types. In winter the gardens take on a different personality with autumnal shades, glossy hips and thorns.

Peter Beales does not believe that roses should be grown on their own so the gardens incorporate many interesting and colourful companion plants and shrubs in its room-like layout with a fishpond, pergolas, arbours and archways. Guided tours and talks are available. Please 'Contact Us.'

The NCCPG is a registered charity, which relies on its members and donations for funding. There are 40 area groups around the UK who organise events and fundraising to support NCCPG conservation activities.
