I have 3 David Austin roses that are producing canes just below the bud union/graft. The leaves on all 3 look the same. though the roses are of different varieties. Is this the root stock? Is it worth keeping? also, there are no new canes coming out above this point.

Hi Trillium,

sounds like the rootstock has taken over... Would you be able to post a pic of the bud-union area of one of the roses, to make sure?

Britta

Hi Trillium,

It sounds very much like rootstock if the stems are coming from below the graft.

One way to try and stop suckers from growing is to make sure that your roses are planted deep with the graft 1 inch
below soil level.Like Britta says if you could post some photos we will check this out for you.
