Default Help needed

I bought two roses last year one for my wife and one for my mum

Both of them for Mothers Day

Last year both plants were lovely, dark green foliage and lovely blooms

Both of them are planted in exactly the same pots

My mums one is still lovely but my wifes is looking a bit worse for wear

As you can see the leaves are small/ deformed

Any ideas as to what the problem is

I would say herbicide damage as the signs of herbicide damage are unique. Has anyone near by been using a herbicide as they emit a very fine mist and can travel a long way on a breeze. Some roses are even sensitive to simple lawn weed killers.

If it is herbicide damage is it recoverable or is it a case of buying a new rose?

I would prune the top growth off anyway then feed and water the plant. It will most likely recover.

If herbicides are to blame for this you might as well take the rose out and replace it. I have seen roses come back after herbicide poisoning but you are wasting your resources here - better to replace.

However I can see that the rose is standing quite close to a painted wooden wall. I once had a case were roses close to a wooden wall showed the same symptoms as your roses and it we found out that the wall was painted/varnished and the wood preserving fumes had damaged the roses!

When last did you paint that wall?

Just as an update

I replaced the rose with a brand new one

I completely cutback the old rose and put the pot and the rose in deep shade behind some large Rhododendron shrubs (I planned on disposing of it accordingly)

Last week I went to empty the pot ready to throw the rose out. The rose had recovered it had new growth the vast bulk of which was healthy leaves and it also had a bloom on it. There was still a small part of the rose that had the deformed leaves (similar to those above) but I just cut those away and it looks ok now

Great news Hector, now you have two roses

Roses are quite hardy (at times) and can take a substantial amount of abuse. We hope to see more from you on this forum. Keep us updated with your roses
