mycorrhizal fungi

Hi folks.

Just wanted to ask you a little question. smile
I see that in the shop here at PBR website they sell the Rootgrow mycorrhizal fungi thingy!  Knowing that many of you will have used it for your roses I wondered have any of you tried it with clematis before?
And if so how did they do?
Where they in the ground or in container and did they establish more quickly than other clematis you planted at about the same time?

Be pleased to know your experiences. smile

Thanks Peter

Re: mycorrhizal fungi

Hi Peter,

I have no direct experience with MF and Clematis, however MF is one of the most important things to all plant life so it will certainly help any plant you have.  It is not "rose specific".

Re: mycorrhizal fungi

Oh thats great! smile Thanks so much Paul.

I'm thinking of carrying out a trial to get some experience and perhaps become the basis for a written article.

Re: mycorrhizal fungi

I think an article wold be a great idea.  I've read a bit and talked to several people about it and I think information is beginning to get into the greater public awareness of its importance.

Re: mycorrhizal fungi

Hi Pete,
I have tried MF on a couple of odd seedlings that seemed to be struggling a bit, & it did seem to help them pick up & they are now growing well. However, don't ask me what the seedlings were - I sort of " collected" them from a visit somewhere!

However, I have just germinated some clematis seedlings - they came through in the last couple of days - so if you like, once they have got going, & if I get them through the winter, I will try MF on them & let you know what happens!

Re: mycorrhizal fungi

Oh yes please Coralie, smile

Thats really good of you, because even if I do carry out a trial of my own, it will probably be under container conditions not in the ground because containers are a more stable and easily controlled condition scientifically.
Garden conditions are very important to include because most clematis are going to be grown outside and not in containers, so scientific trials are not always completely conclusive! (and anyhow there are only so many hours I can give to this each week!) smile

Your help and input are very gratefully received.
Peter

Re: mycorrhizal fungi

Hi, just thought I would post here as I have just (last month)planted six grape vines, two each of three varieties, and have used MF on one of each variety, just to see if there is any difference. I know it's not roses or clematis, but will post again if it's of interest. So far all six are sprouting, no discernable difference yet. I will probably use it on new rose and clematis plantings this year though now that I have it anyway.

Re: mycorrhizal fungi

Hello Zephirine,

A warm welcome to the forum!

Yes please, do keep us updated about your MF grape vine experiment, sounds very interesting to me. BTW, I think any garden related topic might be of interest for someone on the forum so do post away! (you could use the "General Gardening" section if you think a topic doesn't fit in the roses/clematis sections).

Just curious, have you chosen your screen name because 'Zephirine Drouhin' is a favourite rose of yours? I'd also love to hear what roses you grow/like ...

greetings
Hannes

Re: mycorrhizal fungi

Thanks Hannes, yes indeed, Zephirine Drouhin is one of my favourite roses, not least because she's so thorn free, and easy to grow. And it is a lovely name isn't it? Will keep  you informed about the MF.
