Clematis and Rose combination

Hello everyone
I would like to plant a clematis and a rose together against the front wall of my cottage.  The wall faces north-east, is painted cream render and about 20ft high with a potential spread of 20ft.  I would very much appreciate any suggestions you could offer.  At the moment, I am considering Mme Alfred Carriere for the rose planted with a viticella clematis.   The cottage is called Sky Cottage so anything to reflect this would be lovely!  I should also mention that we are in Somerset so it is generally mild but a bit damp!
Many thanks
Snooky

Re: Clematis and Rose combination

Hello Snooky.

I would think that the clematis 'Blekitny Aniol' from the viticella group would do well with Mme Alfred Carriere and it is a slightly mauvey sky blue.  Or you could try 'Perle d'Azur' which is late large flowered hybrid but the flowers are about the same size as 'Blekitny Aniol' around 3 - 4 inches across.
You can see them here  http://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/shop/index.php
You might find that the rose experts will advise allowing your rose to establish for one year before planting the clematis with it.  You better check with them on that.
Hope thats helpfull!

Snooky

Are you looking for a pastel combination?  I saw a pairing of New Dawn and Mrs Chomdeley that was divine growing in a  grand  garden.

I grow New Dawn with Blekiny Angel so know this will work as well, but  you need to wait a while for them to bloom together ( Late July -August).

Wityh a cream render, perhaps a darker rose would be good.  John Howels has a good book on rose combinations.  You cannot beat Compassion with a blue  or purple rose - say Polish Spirit?

Re: Clematis and Rose combination

Sorry for the delay but many thanks for taking the time to reply to my question.  In the end, after taking your advice, doing some research and a very happy visit to Hampton Court Flower show, I purchased the rose Souvenir du Docteur Jamain and am awaiting bare root delivery from Peter Beales.  I would still like to plant a clematis with it but this rose is a beautiful deep red and I am not sure if your suggestions would suit it.  I like the look of Blekiny Aniol and also Hanna - would they work with such a dramatic dark rose?  My soil is a very good loam and I have added lots of manure prior to the rose arriving.  I would be interested to hear if I do need to wait a year before putting a clematis in.   Once again, many thanks for your advice.  It is much appreciated.

Re: Clematis and Rose combination

Dear Snooky,

In many ways the colour combination any individual chooses, is going to be very much down to their own taste.
I prefer to see a complimenting colour rather than a contrast, so I would choose a mid pink clematis like 'Pink Celebration', or 'Hagley Hybrid' even nicer in my opinion 'Rose Supreme' which also has a very good second flowering period in August to September.

I believe they can be planted at the same time and have done this myself, however I do believe that the staff at PBR may suggest giving the rose a year to establish before inflicting the clematis upon it!

Hoping this is helpful.
Sorry for the delay in reply I've been away on holiday.
