Hi,
I need some clematis advice with respect to growing with roses...
1) I have ordered the shrub rose "Gipsy Boy" (Bourbon). I bought a clematis "H F Young" to grow through it, but when I got home my clematis bible "Making the most of clematis" by R. Evison, says this clematis is not suitable to grow on shrub roses. I can only suspect this is because of a conflict between needing to leave previous years wood on the clematis (to produce current years flowers), and the perception that the rose will need pruning. Can you please give me your take on this - I am planning to only minimal pruning (if any) of the rose because of it's type.
2) I have purchased the noisette climber Mme. Alfred Carrier to grow on a garden arch, and also clematis "Rhapsody" as a companion. I was wondering whether I could also grow clematis alpina "Helsingborg" to give some early colour before the rose flowers, or whether this would be too many plants!! The arch is about 3m tall, 0.8m width of trellis.
3) I have two fence trellises 1.8mx1.8m each and I want to grow clematis vitcella "Mme Julia Correvon". I already have jasminum officinale "clotted cream" growing up the trellis. I know that the height of the clematis is about 3m, but I'm not sure of the spread. Would you recommend 1 or 2 plants?

Things have been so quiet here for the last few months I have got out of the habit of checking for posts.

1) I would not be too worried if you plant the H.F. Young with Gipsy Boy. I would suggest that you prune the clematis to about 40cm to 60cm each spring to keep the amount of growth manageable, otherwise it could take over the rose and strangle it. If kept an eye on it should be fine.
2) You may find that having a third plant here would be too much because the alpina 'Helsingborg' does not want to be pruned if at all possible and the amount of material it produces would be too much for this size of arch.
3) With spread measurements of clematis we suggest they will spread about 1/2 to 2/3 of their potential height so Julia will spread about 2 meters therefor you should only need the one plant.
