Re: Need some advice??

Hi brogusblue,
I am no expert but the following may be of use:

Clematis Cirrhosa 'Freckles' is a very early flowering variety [Oct-Jan], sometimes flowering again during the summer, and can be grown in a conservatory [my Dad had one indoors].  Outside, it can grow in a container as long as it faces south or west.  It can grow to about 4-5m so a tall support may be the answer.  It flowers on old wood so it should be pruned after flowering.  Saying that, I have Cirrhosa 'Balearica' which I have left to do its own thing and it is enormous, scrambling through trees [flowers Jan-March]!

Clematis 'Pixie' is, I believe, evergreen, spring flowering and ideal for the patio so a spiral support may be nice!
Pruning for this one is probably the same as 'Freckles' but it is best for the 'experts' to confirm this.

I have Roses AND Clematis are growing in my garden - I have about 16 varieties of clematis at the moment smile

I do hope I have been of some help to you  . . .

Re: Need some advice??

Hello brogusblue,

I should think that being in Bedfordshire you could grow the cirrhosa 'Freckles' outside as long as the soil is not too heavy and the aspect is relatively sheltered from wind.  As Gloriana has said it will grow to about 12-15 feet tall and will be best viewed from below because of its bell shaped flowers. It does like a south or at least sunny aspect and does not mind it being on the root. The cirrhosa are native the the balearic isles in the mediterranean so will cope with quite extreme conditions just not wet at the root or windy.

Pixie is from the New Zealand evergreen group of clematis. It is breed from native New Zealand evergreen clematis and so it is almost alpine in its nature.  It will grow very happily in a container about 12-18 inches in diameter and similar depth and can be potted into a John Innes no.2 compost mixed with a quarter peat and quarter alpine compost.  This sounds like a lot of trouble but if you get the planting wrong with this plant it will struggle to get going so give it the best possible start. You can keep this outside during the summer months and put it in a sheltered corner of the garden over the winter or greenhouse or conservatory.

Any other questions please post or take a look at the How to grow page on our website. www.thorncroft.co.uk
