Clematis in an aviary?

I want to plant a clematis in my aviary, it will be on a South facing stone wall and have an area of 15ft x 8ft to grow on.

The soil would be a little dry at the base of the wall, but could enrich the ground.

Really want something that gives good coverage and doesn't need too much pruning, and has a long flowering period?

Re: Clematis in an aviary?

Hi Steve,

I would recommend clematis from the atragene group as these will thrive in a poor soil which is dry. One in particular that would grow well and show up nicely against a stone wall is 'Propertius'. Here is a link to the page http://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/sho … hp?xSec=29

You could also try alternata which is a species clematis and the page for that is http://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/sho … amp;xSec=4

I hope you find this helpful.

Best wishes
Peter

Re: Clematis in an aviary?

Hi Peter,

the recommendation does look very nice, would like something that might reach a little taller - up to 15ft would be ideal.

Would still like the minimum amount of maintenance and the soil would be a little dry as in full sun.

Re: Clematis in an aviary?

Hi steve1959,

I would have thought you could try even the smaller types of clematis montana like Primrose Star http://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/sho … mp;xSec=30
Sir Eric Savill http://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/sho … mp;xSec=30
or Sunrise http://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/sho … mp;xSec=30
You could also consider the evergreen cirrhosa varieties like Freckles and Jingle Bells http://www.thorncroftclematis.co.uk/sho … mp;xPage=1
I do hope this is helpful.
