A visit to Mannington Gardens will provide you with a unique opportunity to see the true colour and form of many of the roses on this web site in a well established garden setting.
Near to the moated, medieval, manor house are borders with roses used in many different ways. There are roses in containers as well as a small, formal, scented garden. In the main gardens there are many varieties, from ground cover to tree climbers. One bed is planted to give year round colour whilst another provides examples of the main rose types. Some new roses are on trial in the garden.
The Heritage Rose Garden. The old, walled, kitchen garden has areas set out in different styles from medieval to modern times and provides a charming lesson in rose and gardening history. These gardens were started in 1989 and in 2000/2001 were refurbished.
A further area, featuring twentieth century roses, was started in 1997 in a former orchard and now has a children's garden, viewing bridge, a walk with the ‘county’ series of roses, wide borders, formal beds and a plant house.
In 2001 a small display area on garden history, especially roses, was opened. In 2003 a new area on the south lawn was constructed as a Sensory Garden.
There is a special events programme at Wolterton and Mannington including outdoor drama, music and opera, details given on request.
Arrangements can be made for party visits. The Rose Tea Room serves coffee, lunches, teas and snacks.
In June 'The Month of Roses' there are guided walks every open afternoon, open air theatre and music.
The present owner, Lord Walpole, has been developing the gardens since 1969. As farmer, natural scientist and gardener, he has a particular interest in roses and has co-operated closely with Peter Beales for over 20 years.
Container Roses are available from Mannington Gardens on a cash and carry basis during opening hours. |
