From Peter Beales Knowledgebase
What is a Wiki? A Wiki is a tool for compiling knowledge and information into an easy to use and search web page. The biggest and most popular wiki on the Internet is the called Wikipedia. Our wiki aims to be the authoritative source for rose growing information on the Internet where Wikipedia aims to be the authoritative source of all information.
What is Peter Beales Roses Wiki/Knowledgebase
Our Wiki is called the Peter Beales Knowledgebase and although it runs on the same software as Wikipedia and and hence looks very similar it is separate to Wikipedia. The information in our wiki comes from varying sources here at Peter Beales and is constantly changing to stay up to date with evolutions in rose growing and horticulture.
More information on the Wikipedia project
Wikipedia (pronounced /ˌwiːkiˈpiːdiə/ or /ˌwɪkəˈpiːdiə/) is a multilingual, Web-based, free-content encyclopedia project. Its name is a portmanteau of the words wiki (a technology for creating collaborative websites, from the Hawaiian word wiki, meaning 'fast') and encyclopaedia. Wikipedia's articles provide links to guide the user to related pages with additional information.
Wikipedia is written collaboratively by volunteers from all around the world; anyone can edit it. Since its creation in 2001, Wikipedia has grown rapidly into one of the largest reference Web sites, attracting at least 684 million visitors yearly by 2008. Unlike traditional encyclopedias such as Encyclopædia Britannica, no article in Wikipedia undergoes formal peer-review process and changes to articles are made available immediately. No article is owned by its creator or any other editor, or is vetted by any recognized authority.
There are more than 75,000 active contributors working on more than 10,000,000 articles. As of today, there are 2,707,671 articles in English. There are currently 262 language editions of Wikipedia; of these, 24 have over 100,000 articles and 81 have over 1,000 articles. As of July 2008, the five largest language editions are (in order of article count) English, German, French, Polish and Japanese Wikipedias.
English Wikipedia passed the 2 million-article mark on September 9, 2007, making it the largest encyclopedia ever assembled, eclipsing even the Yongle Encyclopedia (1407), which had held the record for exactly 600 years.
