Pruning Taster Sessions UPDATE

What a success!

Our first taster session was on a cold rainy Friday and the tasting of bacon baps followed by a cup of coffee supplied by Sweet Briar went down really well, but hopefully that wasn't the only reason for coming to Peter Beales that day...

The group then moved to our production shed and listened to an indepth talk by Simon, who introduced various pruning tools, including one that arrived in the post that morning that was extremely lightweight with a couple of levers to ease the use when lopping off the branches of tall ramblers. He also showed us how to do an easy slip knot - right over left, under them both, through the hole and pull - do you remember? Simon taught us how to prune - imagine a wine glass, preferably full, red or white it doesn't matter - allow air to flow in the middle - a sloping cut away from an outward facing bud - if you prune too much it won't hurt the rose!

Then the practical side started. Unable to venture outside due to the rain, we were presented with various old containerised roses and a dutch trolley full of freshly dug up 'Golden Wedding' for future potting. The group descended upon these with relish - some more confident than others and within the hour all had been done!

Thank you Simon.

Feedback from the Taster Session

"Thank you all so much for a super training session last Friday.

Sue and I enjoyed it very much and learnt masses. Everything was perfect; from the delicious bacon sandwiches to Simon's wonderful talk - well except the weather!  Very much look forward to visiting you again in the summer to see the gardens.

Thank you and kind regards Serena"

Getting stuck in with the pruning!

Our Pruning Taster Workshops are ideal for both the experienced gardener looking to brush up on their pruning skills or the complete novice wanting to know how to get the best from their roses.

Dates for the Pruning Taster Sessions:
Friday 20th January 2012
Friday 27th January 2012 - SOLD OUT

The workshop will start at 10.00am in The Sweet Briar Bistro where they will be served a hearty bacon bap (or vegetarian equivalent) with a steaming cup of tea or coffee. During this time your expert will introduce himself and run through the workshops itinerary.

Once you have finished your refreshments our rosarian will guide you around the gardens stopping to give practical demonstrations on how to prune the vast range of roses available. Once the talk and tour has been completed you will be given a chance to ask any burning questions and then practice your new learnt skills in our gardens with your expert always on hand to guide you if needed!

The majority of this workshop will take place either in the Peter Beales Gardens or our production building, so it would be advisable for you to wear warm waterproof clothing and please bring your own secateurs and gardening gloves if you have them.

Price is £25 per person
