In September 1908 Gertrude Jekyll was asked to design the almost 5 acre garden at The Manor House, Upton Grey in Hampshire.  The owner of the Manor House was Charles Holme, an important figure in the Arts and Crafts world.

In just under 5 acres Upton Grey’s garden displays almost every facet of Miss Jekyll’s remarkably innovative and beautiful garden art.  To the north-west of the house she planned the Wild Garden.  Here grass paths lead from shallow circular grass steps to grass paths that meander through long grass, wild flowers, rambling and species roses, a copse of walnut trees, past bamboo and Viburnum opulus to a tranquil, once spring-fed, pond.

To the southeast of the house lies her Formal garden.  Here all lines run straight and slopes are transformed into vertical flowerbeds with planted drystone walls.  A pergola leads from the house, across a top terrace of York stone and grass, to steps that run down to the Rose Lawn.  Here, in geometrically laid out beds, roses grow among lilies, peonies and a surrounding of Stachys lanata.  Fortunately almost all Miss Jekyll’s chosen roses are available from Peter Beales today.

Another flight of steps runs between the drystone walls to the Bowling Lawn and then the Tennis Lawn.  On either side of the Rose Lawn, on the higher level run two herbaceous borders.  These too are typical of Miss Jekyll’s new schemes for planting colour.  The colours of the plants run from cool blues and whites at either end to rich, hot yellows, oranges and reds in the centre and then out to cooler colours at the far end.  The two herbaceous borders mirror each other in colour although the planting differs.

Open: Weekdays only in May, June, July and September. 9am to 4pm.
Not open on Bank Holidays.
