    Deciduous shrub or small tree with toothed, hairy leaves. Male flowers appear as cluster of yellow catkins. female flowers bud-like with red styles. February to March. Ht.5m.(16ft.). Leaves turn yellow in autumn. Nuts with woody shell surrounded by leafy bracts after flowers. Grow in sun or shade and fertile, well-drained soil. Good for woodland areas, hedgerows or wild gardens. Often coppiced.
