An ornamental thistle with burgundy red thistles on elegant upright stems above spiny green foliage. Prefers a sunny spot in well drained soil. Good for borders, damp meadows and wildlife gardens.
Dense, upright, evergreen with dark red shoots and aromatic, leathery, dark green leaves. Clusters of fragrant, cream or pale yellow flowers. April. Ht.4m.(14ft.). Spherical black fruit in autumn after flowers. Grow in sun or part shade and moist, well-drained, acid to neutral soil with some shelter. Good for woodland areas or specimen.
Spreading rhizomes send up graceful, arching stems with large, dark green shiny leaves. Sprays of pendent, green-tipped, fragrant white bells on undersides of stems. May to June. Ht.75cm.(2.5ft.). Small black fruit after flowers. Grow in shade or part shade and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Good for shady borders, woodland settings and cutting.
