Cercidiphyllum japonicum (Katsura Tree)

Fast-growing, spreading, deciduous tree, or very large shrub, bearing heart-shaped, leaves that are pink-tinged when young; then rich green turning to a stunning yellow, then orange to purple in autumn, especially on acid soils. Ht.20mt.(65ft.). Has insignificant red flowers. Fallen leaves have distinctive smell of burnt toffee. Grow in sun or partial shade on moist, well-drained soil. Best if sheltered from cold winds. Good specimen plant.
Salvia x jamensis Hot Lips (Sage)

Shrubby-like plant with small, aromatic leaves. Masses of unique flowers open red then mature to two-toned scarlet-red and white. June to October. Ht.50cm.(20in.). Grow in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Deciduous. Drought tolerant but needs shelter from extreme cold. Good for bees and butterflies. Useful in borders or containers.
