Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree)

Large, bushy, evergreen shrub or small tree, bearing glossy, dark green, leathery leaves and shredding brown bark. Pink-tinged creamy-white lily-of-the-valley type flowers from September to November. Ht.8mt.(25ft.). Flowers appear as last season's strawberry-like fruit ripens to red. Grow in full sun and fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Good on coasts, as specimen plant or in large border with shelter.

Upright, evergreen shrub with glossy, wavy-edged, dark green leaves. Male form bearing long, silky, silvery catkins. December to March. Best in sun or part shade and well-drained soil with protection from cold winds. Good for walls or fences.
