Arbutus unedo (Strawberry Tree)

Large, bushy, evergreen shrub or small tree, bearing glossy, dark green, leathery leaves and shredding brown bark. Pink-tinged creamy-white lily-of-the-valley type flowers from September to November. Ht.8mt.(25ft.). Flowers appear as last season's strawberry-like fruit ripens to red. Grow in full sun and fertile, well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Good on coasts, as specimen plant or in large border with shelter.
Eleutherococcus sieboldianus Variegatus

Deciduous, arching shrub with slender, spiny stems bearing bright green leaflets margined creamy-white. Solitary umbels of star-shaped, greenish-white flowers, May to June. Ht.2.5mt.(8ft.). Spherical, black fruit after flowers. Grow in full sun or part shade and well-drained, dry, poorish soil. Good for awkward corners or in border.
