Please note that these are general instructions which apply to most plants, but not all.
The label attached to the plant’s pot will provide more specific details about any specific soil requirement and ideal location.
Before planting any plant it is important to prepare your soil, especially if it is too heavy or freely draining. We recommend mixing a good quality general purpose compost and fish blood and bone feed in with your existing soil.
If planting into pots it is important to remember to water daily, especially during the summer. Plants that are potted require much more watering than ones that are growing in the ground, therefore we also recommend using a compost with a water lock system like Levington’s Multi-purpose compost as this will help to stop the plants drying out.
If planting into the ground make sure the hole is more than wide enough to comfortably fit the plant's root-ball. Incorrect planting depth is actually one of the biggest reasons why a plant will fail. As a general rule try to plant so that the new soil is level with the top of the existing soil that the plant was growing in within the pot. When buying plants it is encouraging to know that most plants are planted at the correct planting depth within their pots.
Carefully remove the plant from its plastic pot and place in the hole. Return the soil and gently firm to remove any air pockets and then water well.
Keep well-watered after planting, especially during the first couple of weeks whilst the plant is establishing its roots and then daily watering thereafter especially during the summer months. Early in the mornings are recommended.
Most plants will benefit from regular feeding, dead-heading and pruning, but this will vary greatly between plants. More in-depth advice about planting and pruning plants can be found within the advice section of our website.
Garden plants in containers are available and delivered throughout the year and usually delivered within 7-10 working days from the date of order.
Please note that if plants are ordered at the same time as roses then the plants may arrive separately, especially during bare root season.
