Tuberous or fibrous roots and the upright, sometimes scandent stems, that have hooded flowers in summer, are poisonous.

Leaves mostly rounded. Looks well placed in borders or rock gardens. Fully hardy. Best grown in full sun, fertile, well-drained soil. Will tolerate some shade.
