Rhizomatous perennials grown mainly for their foliage and fruit.

They have toothed leaves and usually terminal, compact, bottle-brush-like racemes of white flowers with prominent stamens. These are followed by clusters of colourful berries. Ideally suited to woodland aspects or shady borders. Berries are highly toxic if eaten.
