Biennials and perennials bearing rosettes of spiny leaves and heads of tubular, purple, red, yellow, or sometimes, white flowers.

Many are invasive, spreading out with rhizomes or self-seeding. Cultivated forms are useful border plants or good damp meadow or wild garden plants. Best grown in full sun and well-drained soil. Can cope with dry or moist soil. Deadhead to prevent seeding.
