Fibrous or fleshy-rooted annuals and biennials and tuberous or rhizomatous perennials. Mostly deciduous. Clumps of finely divided leaflets giving a fern-like appearance. Mostly terminal, tubular flowers with a spur and reflexed tips. Sun-loving types prefer rock gardens or alpine houses; shade-loving types do better in rock or woodland gardens or as underplanting for shrubs. Provde well-drained soil with a period of dry conditions in summer.
