Annuals, biennials and perennials grown for their showy spikes, racemes or sometimes panicles of shallowly cup-shaped, sometimes hooded, spurred, single to fully double flowers. Mostly fibrous or fleshy roots, sometimes tuberous. Leaves are toothed and lobed. Best in a mixed border or island bed, dwarf ones for the rock garden. They prefer sun and fertile, well-drained soil with shelter from strong winds. Classified into distinct groups. Many varieties suitable for shows.
