Dryopteris

Mostly deciduous ferns, sometimes evergreen in mild winters.

Pinnate or pinnatisect fronds form 'shuttlecocks' in most species. Spores contained in kidney-shaped sori. Best in partial shade and humus-rich, moist, well-drained  soil with shelter. Mostly fully hardy. They look good mixed in with herbaceous and shrub plants. Tender species best in cool greenhouse.
