Erect, hairless, deciduous, rhizomatous perennials that have square stems and often toothed leaves.

Almost stalkless, tubular, purple, pink or white flowers borne in sometimes branched racemes. Flowers remain in new position if moved. Good for mixed border and as cut flowers. Best in sun or part shade and fertile, moist soil.
