Rhizomatous or stoloniferous herbaceous perennials.

Erect or arching, usually hairy stems bearing oblong to lance-shaped, pointed, pale to dark green leaves, which are often shiny and spotted darker green with prominent veins. Flowers are star-shaped, open bells or funnel-shaped with outward pointing tips, often marked or spotted. They prefer deep or partial shade and moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil. Suitable for shady borders, woodland gardens or peat banks.
