Evergreen sub-shrubs and herbaceous perennials with slender stems.
Grown for their simple, lance-shaped to elliptic or oval, often variegated leaves. Also for their showy, long-stalked, star-like or salverform flowers which are borne singly. Fully to frost hardy. Best in full sun to partial shade and any but very dry soil. Very good for ground cover, in borders or on banks, but may sometimes be invasive.
