Camellia - Camellia

An evergreen shrub whose elegant beauty is almost without equal. Flowering from mid-winter to early spring, at a time when it is most welcome. The flowers come in shades of red, pink, white, and pale yellow with various combinations be it striped or splashed. There are a variety of flower forms to suit all tastes, including single, semi-double, anemone-form, paeony-form, rose-form, formal double, and irregular double.

Care is simple, they prefer an acid soil which is humus rich but well drained. Ensure they are well watered especially during summer and early autumn when buds are being formed but do not over feed at this time. In the garden it is preferable to mulch well with organic matter rather than using chemical feeds. This also helps to retain essential moisture. Avoid growing them where they face the early morning sun as winter frosts will damage the buds. A shaded North, North-West facing location is ideal. Pruning is a simple matter of trimming to shape after flowering. Camellias are excellent subjects for growing in pots in ericaceous compost so no garden whatever its soil type or size needs to forgo the pleasures of this most versatile shrub. These plants make ideal gifts which will grow on to become lasting memories.
