Deciduous trees and shrubs suited to woodland or rocky hillsides. Leaves are heart-shaped and the flowers are brightly coloured, pea-like, in stalkless clusters or short racemes during spring.
These are followed by flattened seed pods. Mature plants make excellent specimens, but can also be grown as normal shrub or trained against a wall. Best grown in full sun or dapled shade and moist, fertile, well-drained soil. Resents transplanting.
