Evergreen, monoecious, coniferous trees with scale-like leaves which can be pointed. Mature bark often breaks off into scales. Small, spherical female cones ripen in second year. Ovoid, green male cones borne at shoot tips. Will tolerate dry conditions and are excellent specimen trees. Fully hardy to half hardy. Best grown in full sun and any well-drained soil with shelter from cold, drying winds. Tender plants can be grown under glass.
