Erica

Evergreen shrubs, prostrate to tree-like, with whorled, mainly linear leaves from dark green to golden. Flowers are usually bell- to urn-shaped in terminal racemes, umbels or panicle-like heads.

Very useful as ground cover, en masse, or mixed with other ericaceous plants or conifers. Excellent associate for roses. Tender subjects may need winter protection. Tree-like species excellent as specimen plants. Can also be used in mixed borders. Very attractive to bees. Best grown in an open, sunny position, and well-drained, acid soil. Winter flowering types (E. carnea, E. darleyensis), will tolerate slightly alkaline soil.
