Deciduous large shrub or small tree with deeply veined dark green leaves that are tinged burgandy in autumn. The bark is thin and papery, exfoliating in strips or sheets.

Upright and spreading, the quadrangular branches giving a rounded or irregular shape. Plenty of fragrant, white flowers, the calyces of which swell up and turn deep red.. Does best in sun or dappled shade and moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soil.
