Evergreen shrubs and trees grown for their aromatic, ovate leaves. Flowers are small, greenish-yellow, with male and female ones on separate plants. Best in sun or partial shade and fertile, moist, well-drained soil, with shelter from cold winds. In frost-prone areas may be better grown in a container and brought under cover for the winter. Good for borders, patios, containers and topiary. Very useful as culinary herb.
