Mahonia
Evergreen shrubs grown for their foliage, their usually short racemes of often fragrant, rounded, bell-shaped, yellow flowers and, with tall species and cultivars, for their deeply fissured bark.
Large mahonias make good specimen plants; low growing ones are excellent for ground cover. Fully to half-hardy. Prefers shade or semi-shade and fertile, well-drained but not too dry soil.
