Mainly deciduous, occasionally evergreen, sometimes spiny shrubs. Grown for their edible fruits, or decorative flowers.

Small, tubular, cup- or bell-shaped flowers, are borne singly or in pendant racemes, mostly in spring or summer. Berry-like fruits are spherical or ovoid, and vary in colour from red or black to green or white. Grow in shrub border, or against a wall (R.speciosum), or as informal hedging (R. sanguineum).
