Deciduous or semi-evergreen, shrubs, scramblers, ramblers or climbers, grown for their flowers, often fragrant. and sometimes for their decorative hips. Stems usually bear thorns. Fully hardy for the most part. Range from miniature types to ones of extreme growth. Best grown in an open, sunny site and fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Some tolerate varying degrees of shade.
