Deciduous trees and shrubs grown for their ornamental leaves which are alternate, variable, simple, toothed or pinnate, and often produce good autumn colours. Also grown for terminal, sometimes panicle-like corymbs of small, white, rarely pink, flowers. These appear in spring or early summer. They are followed by mostly spherical, white, yellow, orange, red or brown berries. Best in full sun or dappled shade and fertile, humus-rich, well-drained acid to neutral soil. Good for specimen trees in small gardens, wild or woodland areas.
